03 September 2009

BBC Radio 4 broadcast a 30-minute programme about Allegri's Miserere on September 1st. The broadcast featured The Tallis Scholars' famous recording of Allegri's Miserere made in 1980 and an interview with Peter Phillips, director of The Tallis Scholars. Textile designer Kaffe Fassett, writer Sarah Manguso and conductor Roy Goodman explained how they have all been deeply affected by this beautiful piece of music. The programme may still be available via the BBC iPlayer by following this link.

The Tallis Scholars have made three recordings of Allegri's Miserere. The first is the famous recording made in Merton College Chapel in 1980, the second is a live recording made in the Roman Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore which is also available on DVD-Video, and a third recorded in Merton College Chapel in 2005. The 2005 recording features two versions of the work, one 'traditional' performance and a second performance which features additional embellishments prepared and sung by Deborah Roberts.
